Well, today was to be the day that were going to be hosting an Equine First Aid Clinic here at EER. Unfortunately, the crazy Spring weather here in Colorado blessed us with over 2 1/2' of snow. Not wanting anyone to risk their safety, we have rescheduled for next Saturday. That being said, this past week has been very productive. We had positive updates on all of our rehab cases. Our arthrodesis rehab mare is doing very well. Dr. Andersen advised that she is developing a nice callus of bone around the screws and hardware. She will continue in her rehab here at least 4 more months. The gelding that we had taken down to Texas Equine for kissing spine surgery with Dr. Honnas is doing well now. Initially, he had developed some kind of contact reaction around the surgery site either clipper blade oil or scrub. The blisters healed nicely, but he had also developed a severe reaction at the incision site as well. He had a significant reaction from the sutures and blistered along the incision site as well. Poor guy! He was treated daily and is doing very well. He has started the exercise portion of his rehab. We have also incorporated the Waldhaussen unit to encourage him to engage his hind in while moving forward. Even at a walk, this is teaching him to use his body in proper carriage, especially now that his back is no longer causing pain. In addition to those 2 rehabs, we got a senior (29yr) old warmblood mare in for rehab. I love these cases. What a gem these older horses are! They just seem so wise to me.
We also got a new OTTB in from FL. He is a big, bay 5yr old gelding with a case of the slows. In a matter of days, he attempted to jump the feeder in the paddock and sustained a laceration just under his armpit of his right front. I am convinced he wanted the attention the rehab cases receive.
I am looking forward to the warm sunny days that we are predicted to have. The snow will melt, it will be a muddy mess and the paddocks will be disgusting, but that only means we're headed into warmer weather and greener pastures.
This coming week will not bring more sunshine, but also news. News about the battle I fight with body daily. The pain and the inability to use myself to my full extent due to a life of battling significant injuries. AND here's the crazy thing! NONE of them were caused by horses!! I have been in 6 MVA... All at the fault of the other drivers. ANYWAY, Monday is MY follow-up with my dr to discuss the results of my spine MRI. In other exciting news, we will also be getting some updates regarding the new adventures laid out before us. The path is still unpaved, so there's little I can talk about in that regard. I am optimistic about the days ahead! (stay tuned).
